its not easy to confess love to someone you hold in such high regard when you hold yourself so lowly.

Yeah, he held her in such high regard that he hung out with people who thought that her heritage made her subhuman, called her the contextual equivalent of a n****r, and finally joined a terrorist group dedicated to subjugating people of her heritage and their offspring. Nice. Fact is, he wanted Lily to love him while he was planning on getting power and respect with the Death Eaters subjugating people like her and her family. He wanted to have his cake and eat it too.

Also, ‘bullied, ridiculed, beaten down, destroyed, mocked, betrayed’ - wow, hyperbole much? James and Sirius were shits to Snape in the one memory we saw, Peter was openly enjoying it and Remus was desperately trying to pretend it wasn’t happening. There’s no indication that it was that one-sided all the time. Snape had a wand, and was pretty skilled with it. He invented at least two spells, one designed to cause bodily harm. He was harrassing Remus for an illness he couldn’t help having and was spreading rumours about him, and within a bigoted society that would do much more harm in the way of being ‘bullied, ridiculed, beaten down, destroyed, mocked, betrayed’ and so forth. And nobody ‘betrayed’ Snape. Snape betrayed Lily, and then after she cut off their friendship as a result he managed to betray her again and get her killed.
